Favorite quotes "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "What a ride!!!" Hunter S. Thompson
"It's dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to." Bilbo
What is coaching?
International Coach Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. That's a lot of big words! For more on this topic, click here to see the blog post on this topic.
Is coaching for me?
Here's why you might be ready for coaching:
- Things are good, but you feel a little laggy on your goals and you'd like to get motivated
- You have clear goals, but you need someone to keep you accountable. If that's what you need, I'd suggest Accountability Coaching. Click here.
Coaching may not be for you if:
You are looking for a therapist. Therapy is a very different
Looking for an easy ride
Assessments can be a fantastic gateway to get you thinking about the way your career and life is playing out and what’s missing from your field of vision. Sometimes, people don’t understand or recognize what they have to offer the world, simply because what they excel at is their individual “world view” - something they don’t even recognize as something others can’t do as well. “Isn’t EVERYBODY organized? Doesn’t everybody understand how people feel all the time?” Nope. Those are your specific strengths, and they make you who you are. I love to coach with the positive angle of strengths and help my clients see what’s right in front of them but they just haven’t put into words yet.
Why can I only reserve time during some lunch times and after regular business hours?
I have a regular "day job" and coach on the evenings and weekends. This is very much by choice; coaching can be exhausting because it takes so much focused energy. I love to do something completely different during regular working hours, then attend to clients when they are done for the day or week as well.
I’ve heard that anyone can call themselves a coach - how am I supposed to know who is qualified?
You're right - anyone can open up shop as a coach. Some of them are surely great, some may not have the necessary tools to be a great coach to you and make it worth your time. But how do you know? Check the credentials of your candidates; if you are working with a certified coach, that means they've had a level of training that makes them a confident and capable coach. They've invested the time and energy into being properly trained to be effective. International Coach Federation has regulations and guidelines that are very specific. When you become a certified coach, you promise to uphold those regulations to the best of your abilities.
Coaching just seems too expensive. Is it worth it?
For some people, it’s not. For others, it makes a huge impact on the way they see the world and themselves. Goal setting
Do you guarantee results?
Absolutely not. Having a coach tell you that results are guaranteed is like having an accountant tell you he can make it so you can never pay taxes again or a college counselor tell you that she can get your kid into any college of their choice. In all situations, it depends entirely on the work you put into it. Or the work your kid puts into it. You get the idea. You're driving the bus, and I'm the passenger. My job is to to help you create your own momentum; what you do with that is entirely up to you.
I’m not in crisis. Things are fine. I don’t think I need a coach right now, but I’ll get back to you when things get bad.
